ST. DAVID'S, Pa. – The Neumann University Women's Flag Football team took the short trip to Eastern University to compete in an Atlantic East Conference tri-match on Thursday afternoon. They dropped the first game to the hosts, 40-6, before defeating Holy Family University, 39-0.
In the opener, Eastern got the scoring going at the 7:33 mark of the first quarter with an interception returned seven yards for a touchdown. That was the only score of the first. In the second, the Eagles would add two more scores, including a three-yard touchdown pass and a single-point conversation with 6:15 left, and a 14-yard touchdown pass at the two-minute timeout, making it 19-0 at the break.
With 10:42 left in the third, Neumann scored their first points of the game after a seven play, 66-yard drive, capped by a four-yard touchdown run by
Ava Valente. Eastern was able to answer back with 1:26 left in the quarter with a touchdown and one-point conversion. They added two more touchdowns in the fourth to confirm the win.
In the second game, Neumann got on the board early as they scored just four minutes into the game on a rushing touchdown by
Tasia Gaskins. Early in the second, Valente connected to
Shannon Duffy for another score. On the next series for Holy Family,
Ya'Nayshia Thomas intercepted a pass and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown. Late in the half, on a fourth and goal, Valente again connected to Duffy for a touchdown, and it was 28-0 at the break.
Later in the third, Valente dropped back for a pass from 17 yards out. When she couldn't find a receiver, she ran it into the endzone for a touchdown. The Knights grabbed one more score in the dying seconds on a touchdown pass to
Brook Adams.
Combined, Valente passed for 148 yards and three touchdowns, adding 235 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. Duffy had 59 receiving yards on five catches, scoring two touchdowns. Defensively,
Sam Knight led with 13 tackles and
Marie Berry had nine.
Neumann (7-4, 7-4 Atlantic East) will return to action on Saturday, April 18
th for senior day as the Knights will entertain Marymount University and Centenary University, starting at 4:00 PM.
