ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University baseball team walked-off Rutgers University – Camden 8-7 on Tuesday afternoon. The win is the first for the Knights over the Scarlet Raptors.
After the Scarlet Raptors scored a run in the first inning, the Knights plated three in the bottom of the second. With two runners on base,
Jackson Armiger hit a two-run single. He came around to score on a single by
Nick Ciesielka.
Rutgers-Camden answered with four runs in the top of the third to take a 5-3 advantage. In the bottom of the fourth,
Donovan Brooks led off with a single, stole second and third and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Anthony Rakotz to tie the game at five. With two runners on base,
Andrew Brown hit a single to score Armiger and put the Knights up 6-5. Ciesielka scored on a sacrifice fly by
Yoan Feliz for a 7-5 score after four innings.
The bats went quiet until the ninth inning. The Scarlet Raptors scored two unearned runs to knot the game at seven and send the game to the bottom of the ninth.
Armiger led off with a single in the bottom of the ninth. Ciesielka was hit-by-pitch and Brown hit a bunt single to load the bases with no outs. Feliz hit his second sacrifice fly of the game, this time to score Armiger and give the Knights the 8-7 win.
Armiger finished 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. Ciesielka, Brown and Brooks all had two hits in the game.
Jake Hommer started the game on the mound and went 2+ innings.
Andreas Johnson went 4.0 innings in relief and allowed just two hits and struck out five.
Gatlin Hovenstine and
Tommy Angelucci combined for 2.0 hitless innings.
Rey Carrier pitched the ninth inning and picked up the win.
Neumann (16-11-1) heads to Stevenson tomorrow for a non-conference game starting at 3:30 PM.
