ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University Women's Lacrosse team, for the second straight season, is looking forward to the Atlantic East Conference championship game, this coming Saturday against Marywood University.
The Knights took a challenging non-conference schedule and compiled an 8-8 overall record. They used that experience to forge a perfect 5-0 Atlantic East season, and the top seed in this year's tournament. Marywood earned the second seed on the strength of their 4-1 conference record. Overall, the Pacers are 11-6.
In the semifinal game, Neumann took control of the game 10 seconds into the first quarter on their way to a 16-2 conquest of No. 4 Immaculata University.
Alena Catka led with four goals. She added 10 assists for 14 points, both single-game records in program history. She also had 12 draw controls, three caused turnovers, and six ground balls.
Krista Geibler and
Rachel Roane earned hat tricks and
Maggie Miller scored twice. Marywood took care of business against No. 3 Marymount with a 15-6 victory.
The Knights and Pacers met once in the regular season, on April 10
th, as Neumann came away with a hard-fought 15-12 win. After going down 2-1, the Knights scored four in a row and never trailed again, despite the Pacers pulling within one at 10-9, midway through the third quarter. Catka led the way with five goals, seven draw controls, and three ground balls. Miller and Geibler each put up a hat trick.
Sarah Kiraly got the start in goal and made 12 saves.
The game is scheduled for a 1:00 PM start at Neumann University's Turf Field. Both teams look for their first conference championship, and a berth in the NCAA National Tournament.
