ARLINGTON, Pa – The Neumann College Basketball team finished in sixth place at the Marymount Marine Corps Tip-off after Catholic erased a 15 point deficit at halftime to win 72-71 Sunday afternoon.
Brittany Whetts led four Knights in double figures with 20 points and had her third double-double in as many games with 14 rebounds. Katie Young scored 17, Nicole Feby netted 14 and Krista DiRomualdo added 11 points. Sami Borcky pulled down 11 boards.
Brianna Peterson led Catholic with 22 points. Kerri Confrey netted 19 points. Lauren McPeak grabbed 10 boards.
Catholic started the game strong and took an eleven point lead, 18-7, six and a half minutes in. Neumann followed with a 14-3 run to tie the game at 21-all, capped by a free throw shot by Katie Young.
The Knights continued its run after tying the game and scored the games next 13 points to go up 34-21. Neumann would lead by as many as 21 points in the first half and took a 46-31 lead into the half.
With Neumann up 51-37, Catholic starts its comeback with a 20-9 run over a three and a half minute span and cut the Knights lead to three points, 60-57. The teams would trade baskets and Catholic would tie the game at 70-all with 39 second remaining in regulation.
Caitlin Agnew hit one-of-two from the line with 24 second left to put the Knights up by one, however, Catholics Peterson hit a jumper with 11 seconds remaining to give Catholic the one point lead as they held on for the 72-71 win.
Whetts was named to the All-Tournament team. She had three double-doubles in the three games.
Neumann (1-2) will host Widener on Wednesday evening in a Thanksgiving eve contest at Bruder Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
