ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's ice hockey team opened its 2009-10 season with a 5-1 win over Adrian (Mich.) College Friday night. Adrian College finished the 2008-09 season ranked No. 9 in the country.
Nicki Blazenko netted a hat-trick for the Knights. Jessica Schroeder notched three assists while Diane Peters added two. Laura Keeley made 30 saves in net.
Neumann scored three goals in the first period to take command of the game. Blazenko scored her first goal 6:36 into the game, from Schroeder. Stephanie Nakamura netted a power play goal two minutes later from Schroeder and Peters.
Blazenko netted her second goal at the 13:33 mark of the first, from Brittany Metcalfe. The junior then scored her third goal of the game with 42 seconds left in the second period, the only tally of that period. Peters and Schroeder assisted on the goal.
Adrian would get on the board as Shana Davis scored, unassisted, 8:56 into the third. Holly Williams capped the scoring with 3:45 left in the game. Jasper Thomson assisted on the goal.
Neumann is 1-0 on the young season. The two teams will meet again tomorrow, beginning at 3 p.m.
