ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's basketball team picked up its first win of the season Saturday afternoon, defeating Penn State – Abington, 100-86, in non-conference action.
The Knights started their season in a high note in their new home at The Mirenda Center under the guidance of new Head Coach Lenny Stanziano and his coaching staff.
Neumann had five players with double-digit points. Leading the way was senior guard Na'Sheed Linton, putting up 19 points (8-for-10 from the floor) with three steals. Senior forward Sean Armstrong added 18 points (7-for-9) and eight boards. Senior Guard Ty Robinson helped the offense putting up 14 points and notching two steals.
Underclassman Patrick O'Connor and Reggie Coleman also added to the offensive production. O'Connor put up 15 points and seven rebounds and Coleman put up three from behind the arc to en route to his 11 points.
The first half had each team going on scoring runs. With 14 minutes on the clock, the Knights would tie the game at 15. The Nittany Lions would go on 6-0 run, take a 21-15 lead over Neumann. The Knights answered with six straight points of their own, to tie the game at 21. Then at the 5:45 mark, a layup by Armstrong put the Knights up 31-30, a lead they would hold. Armstrong also put up three free throws with two seconds left in the first half to give Neumann a nine point lead, 47-38, going into half-time. Neumann shot 54.5% for the first half session.
The Knights played a second half strong and only let the Nittany Lions get as close as four points. Linton helped the Knights keep control of the game with two steals within two minutes to help the build their lead to 57-45. With eight minutes left on clock, Neumann built a 20 point lead which Penn State – Abington would peal at but could not penetrate the strong Knight defense. Neumann would hold their lead for rest of the game en route to their first victory of the season.
The team will travel to their cross-town rival, when they face The Pride of Widener University. Tip-off is set for 3:00p.m.
