Baseball Drops Two on the Road

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Neumann College baseball team dropped two games to Virginia Wesleyan Sunday afternoon. The Knights lost the first game, 12-4, while falling in the second game, 10-2.

 

Matt Gallagher was 3-for-4 at the plate in game one, with two runs and an RBI. Kevin Lengyel pitched four innings. Eddy Darrah pitched two innings in relief.

 

Neumann opened the first game with a run in the first inning as Matt Grossi knocked in Kevin Flannigan. However, Va. Wesleyan scored six of its own runs in the bottom half of the first. The Marlins tacked on four runs in the second and one in the third to take an 11-1 lead.

 

Gallagher hit a solo home run in the fifth to make the score 11-2. The Marlins answered with a run in the fifth for a 12-2 score. Neumann scored two runs in the seventh, but it was not enough.

 

The game two, the Marlins jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings. The Knights got on the board in the fourth inning as Eric Silakowski hit a double to knock in Bobby Callan. Va. Wesleyan exploded in the home half of the fourth for six runs to extend its lead to 9-1. Both teams added a run in the sixth.

 

Callan and Silakowski each had two hits in the second game. Scott Hammell started the game on the mound, going 3.1 innings. Art Wharton completed the fourth inning. Sean Quigley and Joseph Slater each pitched an inning.

 

Neumann will open its home schedule on February 25 as it hosts DeSales University. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
