Knights End Regular Season With Win

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann College women's ice hockey team wrapped up its 2008-09 regular season with a 6-4 win over Chatham University Saturday afternoon in ECAC West play.

 

Jenelle Marier led the Knights with two goals. Kayla Dubowski netted a goal and two assists. Carly Fitzsimmons and Jessica Schroeder each notched a goal and an assist.

 

Leah McNaughton had a goal and two assists for the Cougars. Dawson Bancroft-Short notched three assists. Lauren Campbell and Ashley Reid each netted a goal and an assist.

 

The teams combined for four goals in the first period, with each team netting two. Holly Williams opened the scoring nine minutes into the game with a goal from Jasper Thomson and Nicole Alexopoulos. Chatham would tally the next two goals to for a 2-1 lead. Fitzsimmons tied the game at two with under four minutes left in the first off a pass from Brittany Metcalfe.

 

Marier put the Knights ahead for good with her first goal at the 3:10 mark of the second period. Dubowski assisted on the goal. Dubowski then scored, off an assist from Schroeder, to put Neumann up 4-2 heading into the second intermission.

 

Schroeder scored the eventual game-winner just 46 seconds into the third period, from an assist by Fitzsimmons.  The Cougars would get a power play goal to make the score 5-3. Marier netted her second goal, from Dubowski, for a 6-3 Knights lead. Chatham would score another power play goal, but it was not enough.

 

Mel Brunet made 32 saves in net for the Knights as they end the regular season 15-10 overall and 12-6 in the ECAC West. Neumann, who won its final six games of the season, will be the fourth seed in the ECAC West playoffs. The Knights will host Utica College in the first round on Saturday, February 28, at 7 p.m. at Ice Works.

 

Before the game this afternoon, the Knights honored six seniors that played in their last regular season game: Vicki Scott, Jessica Bryan, Robyn Armstrong, Jenelle MarierCarly Fitzsimmons and Tabatha Schury.
