Women’s Basketball Win Fourth Straight, Beat Gwynedd-Mercy

GWYNEDD-VALLEY, Pa. – The Neumann College women's basketball team defeated Gwynedd-Mercy College, 74-64, Monday evening in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action.

 

The Knights had four players score in double figures. Brittany Whetts led the way with 23 points and 21 rebounds. The junior was 13-for-15 from the line. Caitlin Agnew netted 17 points. Sami Borcky scored 12 while Jordan Elgart added 11. Elgart made 3-of-6 from behind the arc.

 

After shooting just 27% from the field in the first half, the Knights made 50% in the second half and finished the game making 40% of their shots.

 

The Griffins also had four players in double figures. Kate Wisniewski scored 11 points. Kristy Cramp, Jackie Dooley and Alison Nelson each added 10.

 

Neumann led for a good amount of the first half, building its lead to seven, 13-6, midway through the half. Gwynedd-Mercy then went on a 12-4 run to take a one point lead with four minutes remaining.  Whetts ended the half with two free throws, but the Griffins took a 24-21 lead into halftime.

 

The Knights opened the second half with a three-pointer from Cecily Scavicchio to knot the game at 24. The half then featured eight ties and five lead changes. With the game tied at 45 with 8:53 left, the Knights went on an 11-0 run, capped by a lay-up by Agnew.

 

The Griffins chipped away at the lead and got to within three, 63-60, with two minutes left on the clock. Whetts then made two free-throws and Elgart hit a three to put the Knights back up by eight. The game ended with the teams shooting six free throws.

 

Neumann improves to 14-7 overall and 9-3 in the conference. Neumann and GMC split the season series after the Griffins took the earlier meeting, 64-57. The Knights will host Immaculata University on Thursday in CSAC play. Neumann defeated Immaculata 67-64 in the first CSAC game of the season. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. The men will follow at 8 p.m.
