ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann College baseball team fell to Keystone College, 11-7, Friday afternoon in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action.
The Knights had four players with two hits. Kevin Lengyel pitched 5.1 innings and stuck out six in the loss. Joseph Slater went 2.1 innings in relief, Ray Schmoltz pitched a third of an inning and Art Wharton pitched the ninth inning.
Eric Groff knocked in five runs for the Giants. He finished the game 2-for-4 and scored two runs. Esteban Meletiche was 3-for-4 and scored three runs. Mike Hanley went 5.2 innings for the win. Gil Vazquez pitched 2.1 innings in relief. Mike Schwartz pitched the ninth inning.
Lengyel started the game out strong, retiring the first nine batters. Neumann scored the first two runs of the game, one in the second and another in the fourth.
Keystone tied the game as Donald Reese hit a two-run homerun in the fifth. Groff then put the Giants ahead with a two-run shot in the sixth inning. Ryan Smyth added two more runs for Keystone on a double.
The Giants added five more runs in the last three innings.
Neumann would not go quietly in the ninth. The Knights started with three straight singles, followed by a walk and another single. Neumann would put three runs on the board, but the come-back attempt was cut short.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow in a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
