Baseball Falls to Penn State-Altoona in Season Finale

KINGSTON, Pa. – The Neumann College baseball team finished its season with a close 5-4 loss to Penn State-Altoona Friday afternoon in an East Coast Athletic Conference (ECAC) South Region semifinal Friday afternoon.

 

Four Knights each had two hits in the contests; Bobby Callan, Kevin Lengyel, Kevin Flanigan and Lincoln Schrock.  Eric Silakowski knocked in two runs.

 

Lengyel went seven innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on 10 hits. He struck out five. Ray Schmoltze pitched the eighth inning.

 

The Knights got into some trouble in the bottom of the first as Penn State-Altoona loaded the bases. Jim Byers hit a bases clearing double to put the Nittany Lions up 3-0. Neumann answered in the top of the second as Silakowski hits a two-run single.

 

Neumann would tie the score at three in the third inning as Matt Grossi knocked in Lengyel.

 

Penn State-Altoona took a 4-3 lead in the fifth. The Knights knotted the game at 4-all in the top of the seventh when Flanigan knocked in Callan. The Nittany Lions scored the game winner in the bottom of the seventh.

 

In the top of the ninth, Callan hit a double to left field with one out. With two outs, Lengyel hit a liner towards second which was fielded by the second baseman who threw out Lengyel to end the game.

 

Penn State-Altoona will face Wesley College in the ECAC South Region Championship game. Wesley defeated host Wilkes University 10-9 in the first game this morning.

 

The Knights finish the season 22-20-1 overall. The 22 wins ties the school record for wins in a baseball season with the 1999 team, who went 22-16.
