Baseball Drops Two At GMC

GWYNEDD-VALLEY, Pa. – The Neumann College baseball team fell to Gwynedd-Mercy College in a doubleheader Saturday morning in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action. Game scores were 10-9 and 9-5.

 

In the first game, Bobby Callan went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Scott Hammell started the game and went two innings. He allowed three runs on three hits. Joseph Slater went three innings and allowed two runs. Ray Schmoltz took the loss in 1.1 innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits.

 

The Knights opened the game with five runs in the top of the first. Neumann would add four more runs in the top of the third, including a base-clearing double for Callan, to take a 9-1 lead. But the Griffins would not go quietly. GMC scored two runs in the third and two in the sixth for a 9-5 game. The Girffins would then score five runs in the bottom of the seventh for the 10-9 come-from-behind win.

 

In the second game, Matt Grossi and George Hatton had two hits. Kevin Lengyel scored two runs. Stan Sauk started the game and took the loss. He went 2.1 innings and allowed eight runs. Art Wharton, Sean Quigley and Kevin Oleszewski all pitched in relief.

 

The Griffins scored one run in the first and three in the second to take an early 4-0 lead. The Knights scored three runs in the top of the third to cut the GMC lead to one. However, GMC scored four runs in the bottom of the third to up its lead to 8-3.

 

Neumann finishes the regular season 19-17-1 overall and 7-7 in the conference. These two teams will meet in the first round of the CSAC Championship Tournament on Wednesday. The game will be on the campus of Gwynedd-Mercy at 2 p.m.
