Neumann 8, Gwynedd-Mercy 7
BOYERTOWN, Pa. – An RBI double by Brian Alberger in the top of the ninth broke a 7-7 tie and gave the No. 2 seeded Neumann College baseball team an 8-7 lead and win over the No. 2 seeded Gwynedd-Mercy College Friday morning in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championships at Bear Stadium in Boyertown, Pa.
Kevin Flanigan, Brian Alburger and Billy Canady each had two hits. Alburger had two RBI and Flanigan scored two runs, including the game winner.
Kevin Lengyel pitched the complete game for his fifth win of the season. He allowed seven runs, five earned, on 10 hits. He struck out six.
The Griffins got on the board in the second inning with three runs. GMC added an unearned run in the third to take a 4-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth, the Knights plated seven runs, all unearned. Billy Canady started with a bunt that the pitcher threw away. Canady ended up on third. Eric Silakowski then reached base on another error by the pitcher. Canady scored and Silakowski moved to second.
Catcher George Hatton singled and Silakowski moved to third. Silakowski scored on a Bobby Callan groundout. The next six hitters reached base, including a walk, double and four singles.
The Griffins answered in the bottom of the fifth with three runs to tie the game at seven. Lengyel then shut down GMC and retired the last seven batters he faced.
With two outs in the top of the ninth, Flanigan singled to right field. After Matt Grossi walked, Alburger doubled to knock in the winning run.
With the win, Neumann improves to 20-17-1 overall. The Knights will face No. 1 seeded Keystone College game tonight at approximately 6:15 p.m. at Bear Stadium in Boyertown. Watch the game here.
Keystone 21, Neumann 7
BOYERTOWN, Pa. – The Neumann College baseball team fell to Keystone College, 21-7, Friday night in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action. Keystone was the number one seed in the tournament.
Billy Canady and Eric Silakowski each went 2-for-4 from the plate. Silakowski also knocked three runs. Matt Gallagher had two RBI.
Scott Hammell started the game and took the loss. He pitched 3.2 innings. The Knights used a total of five pitchers on the night.
Keystone did not waste any time getting on the board with a run in the bottom of the first. Neumann answered with a run in the top of the second, but then the Giants bats came alive. The Giants scored at least one run in every inning, including six runs in the fourth and sixth innings.
Neumann will face the winner of the Gwynedd-Mercy
