Baseball Advances to CSAC Championship Game

BOYERTOWN, Pa. – The Neumann College baseball team advanced to the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship contest with a 10-9 win over Gwynedd-Mercy College Saturday afternoon.

 

Three runs in the eighth inning put Neumann in the lead for the final time in the back and forth game. Matt Gallagher scored the eventual game winner after Matt Grossi reached on an error by the Griffins shortstop.

 

The Griffins got on the scoreboard first with three runs in the second inning. Neumann answered with two two-run homeruns by Kevin Lengyel and Grossi in the top of the third.

 

GMC the plated three runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 6-4 lead. The Knights scored a run in the fourth and one in the fifth to tie the game at 6-all after five innings.

 

The Knights took their second lead in the seventh inning as Kevin Flanigan and Grossi started the inning with back-to-back doubles.

 

The Griffins took the lead back in the bottom of the seventh with two runs.

 

Foster McKoskey opened the eighth inning with a single for the Knights. Bobby Callan then reached on an error by the second basemen. Gallagher followed with a walk to load the bases. Lengyel singled to tie the game at seven. With one out and the bases still loaded, Grossi grounded to the shortstop who threw it away, allowing Callan and Gallgher the score.

 

The Griffins scored one run in the eighth and went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth as the Knights held on for the 10-9 win.

 

Grossi was 3-for-5 from the plate with five RBI. Lengyel went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. George Hatton went 7+ innings. He struck out five in the no decision. Sean Quigley went two innings in relief and picked up his first win of the season. After hitting the first batter his faced, Quigley retired the final six Griffins.

 

With the win, Neumann (21-18-1) advances to the CSAC Championship game tomorrow in La Plume, Pa. The Knights will face the Giants of Keystone College. First pitch is slated for 10 a.m. with a second game to follow if needed.
