ASTON, Pa. – Neumann University men's basketball came away with an 87-79 overtime victory over Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) opponent Gwynedd-Mercy College Saturday afternoon.
Neumann had five players in double figures. Ty Robinson led all scorers with 21 points. Na'Sheed Linton netted 16, Patrick O'Connor contributed 12, going 2-2 from beyond the arc. Marquise Boggs scored 12 points and pulled in 7 rebounds, while Mike Walukiewicz drained 11.
The Griffins were led by Jon Hogga who netted 17 points and pulled in 11 rebounds. Frank Champion added another 13 points for Gwynedd-Mercy.
The best action of the night was seen in the second half and in the overtime period. Boggs extended the Knights lead to 10 points at the start of the second half, but the Griffins would not go quickly. Strong play from Gwynedd-Mercy's Hogga and Champion under the basket, resulted in the Knights lead being cut down to as few as two points with 12:25 remaining. The Griffin momentarily took a one point advantage, but a Robinson jumper returned the lead to Neumann.
For the remainder of the half, the Knights never trailed. A John Lewis three-pointer extended Neumann's lead back to 8 points, 62-54, with 7:15 left in regulation. Gwynedd-Mercy would not let up and tied the game at 69 with 2:19 remaining, but a Robinson jumper gave Neumann back a two point lead. A made lay-up by Gwynedd-Mercy's Matt Johnson with 39 seconds left on the clock would send the game into overtime.
In the extra session Neumann never trailed and outpaced the Griffins 16-8. The Knights knocked down 10-13 from the foul line, giving them the point margin they needed for the victory. It's fitting that the overtime game winner would come when Linton draining both from the foul line with 1:30 remaining.
The first 20 minutes saw the Griffins opening up the scoring on a Hogga jumper. The Knights would not let Gwynedd-Mercy open up a lead. Linton gave Neumann their first lead of the night just under two minutes into the half. The teams then traded several baskets until Walukiewicz hit one from the foul line, giving Neumann a nine point margin, the largest of the half, with 12:10 remaining. Gwynedd tried chipping into the Knights lead, cutting into down to three points, before it was extended back to 36-27 going into halftime.
Neumann (9-7, 7-2 CSAC) is back in action on Monday evening against CSAC opponent Immaculata University. The men game will tip-off after the conclusion of the women's game.
