POMONA, N.J. – The Neumann University men's basketball team fell to Richard Stockton College, 70-57, in its 2010-11 season opener Monday evening.
Patrick O'Conner led the Knights with 19 points, including three from beyond the arc. Marquise Boggs added 11 points while Dom Gibson had nine. The team spread out its 30 rebounds.
Pat Kelly led all players with 20 points. Kai Massaquoi added 16 points and nine rebounds for Stockton while Nnamdi Usuwa had 11 points and eight boards.
With the score 12-7 Ospreys, RSC went on a 12-2 run to take a 24-9 lead with 8:51 left in the first half. Gibson broke the run with a three-pointer. Stockton scored its 30th point with 2:31 left on the clock, but could not get another point in the half while Neumann chipped away at the lead. The Osprey led by just five, 30-25, at the half.
Stockton opened the second half with five straight points to build its lead back up to 10, 35-25. The closest the Knights would get was seven with 9:07 left in regulation, 49-42, but Neumann could not connect on its shots and netted just two points over the next seven minutes. Meanwhile, the Ospreys built their lead to 18 and held on for the win.
Neumann (0-1) is right back on the court tomorrow night when it travels to Annapolis, Md. to face the U.S. Naval Academy. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
