Knights Use OT to Hand RNU First Loss

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's basketball team handed Rutgers-Newark University their first loss with a 77-72 win in overtime Saturday afternoon.

Patrick O'Connor led the Knights with 14 points, all which were scored in the first half. Marquise Boggs netted 13 and Rich Whitten added 12.

Pedro Burgos led all players with 27 points. Jeremiah Rivers notched 16 rebounds and 12 points. Greg Moore added 10 points.

Whitten hit a lay-up with 57 seconds left in overtime to give the Knights their first lead in the extra session, 73-72. He was also fouled and hit the free throw for a two-point advantage. Terrance Clark then hit one-of-two from the line with 35 seconds on the clock. Boggs then stole the ball and was fouled. He sank both free throws for the 77-72 final.

Neumann started the game with a jump and got an early 7-0 lead three minutes in. The Scarlet Raiders chipped their way back in and tied the game at 11-all with 13:48 on the clock. Rutgers-Newark would hold a four point lead, 31-27, going into halftime.

With 12:40 left in the second half, the Scarlet Raiders went on a 13-5 run over four-and-a-half minutes to build an eight point lead, 56-48. Then with 3:45 on the clock, Clark hit a jumper to put Neumann up 61-60. The teams traded baskets in the final three minutes and Rutgers-Newark hit two free throws with 10 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime tied at 67.

Neumann improves to 4-5 overall. Rutgers-Newark is now 10-1. The Knights will next take the court on January 5th when they travel to Rowan University.
