Whetts Sets Neumann Scoring Record in WIn

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team held off Immaculata University, 79-75, in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) game that came down to free throws in the final seconds.

Brittany Whetts led the Knights 39 points, including going 13-for16 from the line. Whetts also became the leading scorer in Neumann's history with a bucket at the 18:38 mark. She surpassed Tim McKees mark of 1,691 that he set in 1993. Nicole Feby netted 11 points. 

Four players scored in double-figures for the Mighty Macs, led by Chrissy Esdensen. Leah Kuczynski and Kelly Brown each scored 12. Bridget Welz added 10.

Whetts netted four shots from the line in the final three seconds for the Knights to pull out the win. Down by two, Feby hit a three-pointer with 12 seconds left and was fouled to put the Knights up by two. Immaculata answered with two free throws to knot the score at 75 with four seconds remaining. The Mighty Macs then fouled Whetts on the inbound to send her to the line.

The Mighty Macs came to play and paced the first half. They built up a 15 point lead, 29-14, in the first 15 minutes of the game. The Knights came storming back before the end of the half. Started by a Feby three-pointer, Neumann went on a 16-3 run to end the half. The teams were knotted at 30, but Immaculata made the last bucket before halftime to take a two point advantage, 32-30, into the locker room.

The second half remained close, featuring six ties and each team taking a six point lead. Four of those ties came in the final 3:45. 

Before the game, Neumann honored its six seniors: Caitlin Agnew, Jordan Elgart, Stephanie Fanto, Nicole Feby, Coleen Healy and Brittany Whetts.

With the win, Neumann (18-5, 14-1 CSAC) clinched the No. 1 seed in the CSAC playoffs and will host a semifinal game on Thursday, 25. The Knights will wrap-up regular season action this Saturday as they host Cabrini in a make-up game from February 6. Tip-off is at 1 p.m.
