Baseball Opens Home Action Holding Off Cougars

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University baseball team opened its home schedule with a 6-5 win over Misericoria University Wednesday afternoon.

Joe Armata led the Knights with three RBI. Gary Mitchell and George Hatton each had two hits. Ray Schmoltze started the game and went 7.0 innings to pick up the win. He struck out five. Joe Slater and Sean Quigley also pitched.

The Knights put four runs on the board in the second inning to jump on top. Armata opened the scoring with a three-run double. Hatton then knocked in Armata with a single to right.

Neumann added a run in the third to take a 5-0 advantage. The Cougars scored two runs in the top of the fourth on a two-run homerun. Misericordia kept trying to climb back into the game, and cut Neumann's lead to one, 6-5. The Cougars put a man on second base in the top of the ninth, but he was picked off by Quigley.

Neumann (4-8) will travel to DeSales next Tuesday for non-conference action beginning at 3:30 p.m.
