HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The Neumann University baseball team opened Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action with a sweep over Centenary College Saturday afternoon. Game scores were Neumann 12, Centenary 1 and Neumann 8, Centenary 6.
In game one, Ray Schmoltze pitched a complete game and did not allow a hit as the Knights won 12-1. Schmoltze allowed one unearned run while striking out eight in 7.0 innings. Kevin Flanigan was 2-for-4 at the plate and knocked in three runs. Mathieu Vallieres, Gary Mitchell and Joe Armata each had two RBI.
The Knights jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the third, capped by a bases-clearing double by Flanigan. Neumann would score in every inning from the third inning on. The Cyclones plated their only unearned run in the bottom of the seventh.
In the second game, Centenary scored first in the home-half of the first inning. The Knights would tie the game at one in the third inning when Matt Gallagher knocked in Bobby Callan. Centenary answered with three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-1 advantage.
The Knights then plated four runs in the top of the fourth, highlighted by a two-run single by Gary Mitchell. Neumann added three more runs in the fifth for an 8-4 lead. The Cyclones plated one run in the fifth and another in the seventh, but could not score the equalizer and the Knights came away with the sweep.
Scott Hammell pitched 5.0 innings for the win. He struck out three. Sean Quigley went a third an inning. Erik Klimoff picked up the save, going 1.2 innings.
Neumann improves to 7-8 overall and opens 2-0 in the conference. The two teams will meet tomorrow to wrap-up the weekend series. First-pitch is slated for 1 p.m. at Bruder Field.
