ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University baseball team split a pair of games with Gwynedd-Mercy College Saturday afternoon in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action. Games scores were Neumann 11, Gwynedd-Mercy 2 and Gwynedd-Mercy 7, Neumann 3.
In game one, the Griffins struck first and took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. In the bottom of the first, the Knights took advantage of a GMC error and put three on the board. Neumann scored one run in the second and another in the third to take a 5-1 lead.
Up 7-2, Neumann put four runs on the board in the sixth inning with two two-runs shot by Gary Mitchell and Matt Compton to take the 11-2 advantage.
Mitchell went 2-for-4 in the game with two homeruns, three RBI and three runs scored. Mathieu Vallieres was 2-for-3, scored two runs and knocked in one. Matt Grossi and Michael Tomeo also went 2-for-3.
Russell Gilliam went 6.1 innings for the win. He allowed two runs on four hits and struck out seven. Mike Dicken pitched 0.2 innings with one strike out.
GMC took a 1-0 lead again to begin game two. The Knights responded as Matt Gallagher knocked in Bobby Callan in the bottom half of the first. The Griffins then put three runs on the board in the second for a 4-1 lead.
The Knights added runs in the third and fourth to cut the Griffins lead to one, 4-3. GMC took back control of the game with three runs in the top of the fifth for a 7-3 lead and eventual win.
Vallieres and Grossi had two hits for the Knights in the game. Gallagher knocked in two runs. Ray Schmoltze started the game and 4+ innings in the loss. He allowed seven runs, four earned, and struck out two. Joe Slater pitched in inning in relief. Art Wharton went the final two innings.
Neumann (9-12, 4-4 CSAC) and Gwynedd-Mercy (13-10, 7-4) will meet against tomorrow at GMC beginning at 1 p.m.
