Baseball Falls to Griffins

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – The Neumann University baseball team fell to Gwynedd-Mercy College, 16-11, Sunday afternoon in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action.

The Griffins opened the game with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Knights answered with three runs in the top of the second, capped by a two-run double by Joe Armata. Neumann added a run in the third, but the teams were knotted at 4-all after three innings.

GMC plated three unearned runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-4 lead. After Neumann got two runs back, Gwynedd-Mercy put the game out of reach with six runs in the home half of the fourth innings to jump to a 13-6.

The Knights did not go quiet and added three runs in the seventh, but could not overcome the deficit.  Scott Hammel started the game and went 3.2 innings. He allowed seven runs, four earned, and struck out two. George Hatton, Art Wharton, Sean Quigley and Wayne Lelle also pitched in the game.

Neumann (9-13, 4-5 CSAC) will face Philadelphia Biblical this weekend in the conference series. The Knights will travel to PBU on Friday beginning at 3 p.m. and will host the Crimson Eagles on Saturday for a doubleheader at noon.
