Bats Come Alive as Baseball Sweeps PBU

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University baseball team swept Philadelphia Biblical in a pair of games Saturday afternoon in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action. Game scores were 15-8 and 15-5.

The Crimson Eagles bats got hot first in the first game as they put eight runs on the board in the second inning for an 8-1 lead. Neumann started chipping away at the lead scoring seven runs in the third inning, highlighted by a two-run single by Joe Armata, knotted the game at 8-all.

Kevin Flanigan led the fourth inning off with a solo homerun as the Knights continued the offense with five runs in the inning to take a 13-8 lead. Brent Tamane knocked in two runs in the fifth on a single for a 15-8 score.

Tamane was a homerun away from the cycle in the first game, going 4-for-4 with five RBI and two runs scored. He had two singles, a double and a triple in the game. Flanigan was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Scott Hammell started the game. Russell Gilliam went 5.2 innings in relief for his third win of the season. He allowed one run on two hits and struck out 10.

The offense remained hot in the second game. Neumann put three runs on the board in the first inning. PBU responded with three in the top of the second. The Knights plated six runs in the third. Matt Compton opened the inning with a solo shot. Gary Mitchell wrapped-up the six runs with a two-run home run. 

Neumann sealed the sweep with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Brian Alburger had a two-run single to cap the runs.

Ray Schmoltze started the game and went 4.0 innings for his fourth win of the season. He struck out four. Art Wharton, Sean Quigley and Erik Klimoff each went an inning in the win.

Neumann will host Haverford College on Wednesday in non-conference action. First pitch is slated in 3:30 p.m.
