Mitchell Hits Homerun to Lift Knights Over Fords

ASTON, Pa.Gary Mitchell hit a two-run homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning to five the Neumann University baseball team a 10-9 win over Haverford College Wednesday afternoon in a rain soaked non-conference game.

 

Kevin Flanigan was 2-for-3 in the game with three RBI and scored a run. Matt Grossi had two hits and scored two runs. Mathieu Vallieres knocked in two runs on a homerun

 

Neumann started strong and plated six runs in the first inning. Vallieres started the scoring with a two-run shot to right-center field. Flanigan knocked in two runs on a double to left field. The Knights added a run in the second and third to take an 8-0 lead.

 

In the top of the fourth inning, Haverford started to chip away at the lead. Jeff Butera hit a three-run homerun to put the Fords on the board. Jeff Rickert had a solo shot to lead-off the fifth inning for an 8-4 score.

 

Haverford put together five runs in the sixth inning, including a two-run double by Bobby Hunley, to take a 9-8 lead.

 

With two outs in the home half of the sixth inning, Grossi hit a single up the middle. Mitchell then hit his homerun to left field to put the Knights back on top.

 

The game was called after the Ford batted in the seventh inning due to the weather.

 

Scott Hammell started the game and pitched 5.0 innings. He allowed four runs on six hits. George Hatton went 1.0 innings and picked up his first win on the season. Erik Klimoff pitched 0.2 innings for his third save of the season. Joe Slater and Art Wharton also pitched for the Knights.

 

Neumann improves to 13-13 overall this season. Haverford is 21-12 on the season.  The Knights travel to Marywood on Friday for a conference game beginning at 3 p.m.
