Knights Sweep Pacers in Baseball Action

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University baseball team swept of a pair of conference games from Marywood University Saturday afternoon. Scores in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) contests were Neumann 11, Marywood 10 and Neumann 9, Marywood 2.

The Knights scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the come-from-behind 11-10 win in game one. Brent Tamane hit the two-run single for complete the victory.

After Marywood opened the game with two runs in the top of the first inning, Neumann answered with three runs in the home half. The Pacers then plated three runs to take a 5-3 advantage after two innings. Marywood took advantage of a few Neumann errors to put four more runs on the board in the fourth inning. The Pacers added a run in the top of the seventh inning for a 10-4 lead.

Then the Knights comeback began. Neumann loaded the bases on walks to start the inning. All runners advanced on a wild pitch for the Knights first run of the inning. Matt Gallagher then hit a sacrifice fly to right field. With two outs, Neumann put together four straight base hits for three runs and a 10-9 score.

With the bases loaded again after Tim Dougherty was hit by a pitch, Tamane won the game with a two-run single to score Dustin Kology and Bobby Callan.

George Hatton picked up his second win of the season, going 4.0 innings in relief. He allowed just one run, none earned, and struck out one. Ray Schmoltze started the game and went 3+ innings.

In game two, the Knights broke open the game with five runs in the fifth inning. Neumann opened the scoring with two unearned runs, one in the second and one in the third. The Pacers put two runs on the board in the top of the fourth. Neumann answered with two runs in the bottom half for a 4-2 lead. Kevin Flanigan knocked in Gary Mitchell with a triple to left-center, and then scored on a wild pitch.

The Knights plated five runs in the fifth inning the seal the win, highlighted by a two-run homerun by Mitchell. 

Russell Gilliam went 6.0 innings for his fourth win of the season. He allowed two runs on four hits and struck out seven. Joe Slater and Erik Klimoff pitched the seventh inning. 

Neumann (16-13, 10-5 CSAC) will face Wesley College in non-conference action Monday evening at Frawley Stadium beginning at 7 p.m. Marywood falls to 11-21, 6-9 in conference play.
