Baseball Drops Two at Keystone

LA PLUME, Pa. – The Neumann University baseball team dropped a pair of games to Keystone College, 5-4 and 8-7, Monday afternoon in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action.

In game one, Matt Grossi went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Bobby Callan was 2-for-2 and scored a run. Ray Schmoltze went 6.0 innings and struck out three in the loss.

Keystone put two runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning. The Knights tied the game at two in the fourth inning. The Giants answered with one run in the home half of the fourth. 

Neumann took a 4-3 lead in the top half of the fifth inning on back-to-back hits by Matt Gallagher and Grossi. Keystone took the lead back with two unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Knights put the tying run on base in the top of the seventh inning, but could not get the run in.

In the second game, Kevin Flanigan was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Gallagher went 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Gary Mitchell was 2-for-3, knocked in two runs and scored one. Scott Hammel pitched 2+ innings. Art Wharton went 2.1 and struck out two and George Hatton pitched 1.2 innings. 

The Knights scored first as Gallagher knocked in Callan in the first inning. The Giants then put two runs on the board in the first and five in the third to take a 7-1 lead.

Neumann did not go quietly and began chipping away at the lead. Mitchell knocked in Gallagher and Grossi in the fifth inning. Gallagher led off the seventh inning with a solo homerun to cut the Giants lead to 8-4. The Knights added three more unearned runs to get within one run, but could not get the tying run on base and fell 8-7.

Neumann (8-10, 3-2 CSAC) will host Keystone tomorrow afternoon beginning at 3 p.m.
