ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University softball team swept of pair of Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) games against Cedar Crest College Friday afternoon. Game scores were 9-0 and 9-1, both in five innings.
In the first game, Neumann took an early 1-0 lead as Lauren Castiello knocked in Kim Kirkpatrick in the first inning. The Knights then added five unearned runs in the second inning, highlighted by a two-run homerun by Kirkpatrick. Castiello also knocked in a run in the second.
Neumann then added two more runs in the third and an insurance run in the fourth for the 9-0 win. Rachel Purpuro (4-3) went 5.0 innings for the complete game win. She struck out four and allowed just two hits.
Castiello ended the game going 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Kirkpatrick went 2-for-3 with two RBI and scored two runs.
In game two, both teams' bats remained quiet until the fifth inning. The Falcons broke the scoreless game as Lauren Salge knocked in Amy Nasinka.
In the home half of the fifth, the Knights opened with seven straight hits. Callie Emel opened the rally with a single, followed by bunt singles by Gabrielle Lulias and Stephanie Marrone. Kirkpatrick then knocked in two runs on a single to center field to put the Knights up 2-1. Jennifer Goslin followed with a two-run double. Castiello and Lauren Hanson followed with doubles of their own for a 6-1 Knights lead.
With two outs, Neumann put together four consecutive hits for three runs and the 9-1 win.
Sarah McGann (4-5) pitched 5.0 innings and allowed one run on four hits while striking out four. Kirkpatrick went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Marrone also went 3-for-4 and scored a run. Lulias was 2-for-4 in the nightcap with an RBI and two runs scored.
Neumann (11-11, 9-1 CSAC) will travel to Keystone tomorrow for a CSAC doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
