Baseball Splits with Mighty Macs

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University baseball team split with Immaculata University Saturday afternoon in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) doubleheader. Game scores were Immaculata 9, Neumann 8 and Neumann 9, Immaculata 3.

 

In game one, Kevin Flanigan was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Gary Mitchell and Tim Dougherty both had two hits. Ray Schmoltze went 4.0 innings to start the game. Joe Slater took the loss, going 0.2 innings. Art Wharton and Mike Dicken also pitched.

 

The Knights batted around plus one and put five runs on the board in the first inning. The Mighty Macs got two runs back in the bottom of the first. Matt Hard then had a hit a two-run triple in the fourth inning and Immaculata came away with a 6-5 lead after four.

 

Neumann answered with three runs in the top of the fifth to take back the lead. Immaculata answered with three runs of its own to take the 9-8 lead. The Knights put two men on in the top of the seventh, but could not plate the tying run.

 

Neumann started the second game strong by scoring four runs in the top of the first, three being unearned. Flanigan then hit a two-run single in the second inning for a 6-0 advantage.

 

Immaculata scored its three runs in the fourth inning. Gary Mitchell hit a two-run shot in the top of the seventh for insurance.

 

Russ Gilliam went the distance for his fifth win of the season. He struck out five in the 7.0 innings. 

Before the game, Neumann honors its two seniors, relief pitchers Joe Slater and Art Wharton.

 

Neumann will face Wesley College on May 10 in a make-up non-conference game. The single game is slated to start at 3 p.m. in Dover, Del.
