Baseball Drops to Wesley

DOVER, Del. – The Neumann University baseball team dropped its final regular season game to Wesley College, 18-10, Monday afternoon in non-conference action.

The teams combined for 28 runs, 29 hits and seven errors in the nine inning , three-and-a-half hour contest. 

Gary Mitchell went 4-for-5 from the plate with three RBI and two runs scored. Brent Tamane was 3-for-6 with three RBI and a run scored.

Neumann had seven pitchers in the game. Russell Gilliam started the game and went 2.0 innings. Joe Slater took the loss in 0.2 innings.

The Knights scored seven of their 10 runs in the second inning. NU scored the seven runs on three homeruns. After putting getting the first two men on base, Tamane hit a three-run homerun to left field. Mitchell then hit a two-run shot, as did Tim Dougherty. Neumann held an 8-4 lead after two innings.

In the fourth and fifth innings, the Wolverines took advantage of some Knights errors and plated seven runs, five unearned, to jump out to a 15-9 lead. 

Bobby Callan knocked in a run in the eighth inning, but Neumann could not put any more runs on the board and fell 18-10.

Neumann (18-15-1) opens the conference playoffs on Wednesday when it travels to Gwynedd-Mercy. The first round game begins at 2 p.m.
