ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's basketball beat Delaware Valley College in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic 94-78 Saturday afternoon.
The win is in the books, but it was a result the Knights would have to work hard to reap the benefits of being called victorious. The first half saw the Knights take a half time lead 42-41. The Knights would take a 15-14 lead with 13:22 remaining in the half. Inspiration was needed as the Knights weren't able to find rhythm or energy.
The Knights would continue to battle back and forth with the Aggies, exchanging baskets. The Knights would then find themselves down seven points with 2:35 remaining in the half. The Knights finished the half on a 9-2 run walking into the locker room with a one point halftime lead.
The second half started with Patrick O'Connor, Mike Walukiewicz, Mark Blount, Mel Weldon and Steve Warhola. The new line up invigorated pride and passion to compete and execute. It only took two minutes for the players to respond giving the Knights a 9 point lead 50-41. The Knights would fluctuate their lead from anywhere between three and seven points and the score stood 70-66 with 6:49 remaining in the game. The Aggies wouldn't get any closer, as the Knights would open up the game to as many as an 18 point advantage.
The Knights went 50% from beyond the three point arc (15-30). The Aggies were more aggressive on the boards recording 41 rebounds to the Knights 36 rebounds and had 10 steals to the Knights nine steals.
O'Connor would finish the game leading five players in double-figures 18 points. Walukiewicz and Gerald Bryant finished with 17 points. Double-double specialist Blount finished with 15 points, 14 rebounds, four blocks and an alley oop to send the crowd in delirium. Dom Gibson contributed 11 points in the Knights win. Weldon was Johnny on the spot, as he was a much needed spark.
Neumann (3-1) will open conference play on Monday when it travels to Cabrini College.
