ASTON, Pa. – In a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) semi-final matchup the Neumann University women's basketball team defeated Gwynedd-Mercy College Wednesday night, 65-48.
Katie Young led the way for the Knights putting up a double-double with 18 points and 15 boards. Sami Borcky added 14 points while Krista DiRomualdo contributed with 11. Neumann as a team accounted for 17 steals with Bethany Humenik and DiRomualdo each having six.
The Griffins were led by Brittany Neill as she had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Stacey Judge and Dara Nelson got into double digits with both scoring 10 points.
The game came down to the last seven minutes of the game as the Knights led by three points, 46-43. Neumann went on an 8-0 run to jump up to an 11 point advantage, 54-43, with 4:16 on the clock, capped by a Humenik three-pointer. Humenik would score the Knights next four points as well for a 58-44 lead with 2:42 remaining in the game. After clutch free-throw shooting from Young, the Knights pulled away with the 65-48 victory.
Gwynedd-Mercy jumped out early on a 6-0 run to begin the first half. Neumann would then go on a 7-0 run to take the lead 7-6. The Griffins started to pull away after a 10-1 push to give them the 16-8 lead with 8:34 remaining in the half. The Knights showed no mercy going on an 11-0 run to give Neumann the 19-16 lead following a three-pointer by Erica Marvel. Neumann would hold the lead and go into the locker room with a 24-22 lead.
Neumann came out firing in the second half extending their half-time lead to 12 after back to back three's by Marvel. The Griffins would not let their season go without a fight cutting the lead to three with just over 7 minutes remaining in regulation.
Neumann improves to 19-7 on the season and advances to its second straight conference championship game. The Knights will host the Mighty Macs of Immaculata on Saturday.
