ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team will host Gwynedd-Mercy College in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Semifinal matchup tonight at the Mirenda Center. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 pm
Coming off of a first round bye, No. 1 seeded Neumann looks to avenge its only regular season conference loss when it takes on the Griffins, who earned the No. 4 seed in the CSAC playoffs. The matchup also features a rematch of last season's CSAC championship game, which Neumann won by a score of 75-58.
The two schools split the season series, with each team taking home a win on their opponent's home floor. In the first meeting at Gwynedd-Mercy on January 17th, Neumann came away with a 56-52 victory over the Griffins. Leading the Knights that day were Katie Young and Bethany Humenik. Young registered a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds, while Humenik pitched in 12 points and 7 rebounds. Kieran Young also added 9 points and 7 rebounds.
In the second matchup held at the Mirenda Center on February 5th, the Griffins came away with a 73-67 win over the Knights. This would be the only loss Neumann suffered in CSAC play all season. Katie Young again led the Knights with 22 points and 17 rebounds. Erica Marvel and Kieran Young both added 15 points for Neumann in the loss.
For the season, the Knights have counted on CSAC Player of the Year Katie Young. The senior has averaged 16.1 points and 12.8 rebounds per game this season and is also second in the nation in double-doubles. The senior has registered 23 in the 25 games played. Fellow senior Krista DiRomualdo and sophomore Bethany Humenik have also been key performers for the Knights. DiRomualdo has averaged 10 points per game, while Humenik has chipped in with 8.8 per game. Kieran Young has also played a vital role for Neumann, starting in all 25 games the team has played.
The Griffins are led by First-team All-CSAC performer Kristy McGrath. The senior forward averages 16.8 points and 7.7 rebounds per game for Gwynedd-Mercy this season. Aiding McGrath for the Griffins is guard Brittany Neill. The junior averages 12.4 points and 6 rebounds per game on her way to Second-team All-CSAC honors.
The winner of tonight's CSAC semifinal matchup will take on the winner from the other semifinal contest between No. 2 Marywood University and No. 3 Immaculata University. The CSAC Championship game will be held on Saturday February 26th at the highest remaining seed.
