ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team won its second straight Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship with a 66-60 win over Immaculata University on Saturday afternoon.
Katie Young notched the 1000th point of her career in the win. She finished the game with 25 points, 15 rebounds and three blocks. Krista DiRomualdo dropped 15 points in the win. Sami Borcky grabbed 12 rebounds.
For Immaculata, Chrissy Esbensen scored 16 points. Chelsea McTigue notched 14 while Rachel Denis added 10.
The game came down to the final 1:21 in the second half and the teams tied at 60. Bethany Humenik sank a three-pointer with 56 seconds to put the Knights up 63-60. With 30 seconds left, Young was fouled and made 2-of-2 from the line for a five points Neumann advantage. Humenik then sealed the win, going 1-for-2 from the line with 10 seconds on the clock.
Neumann held the play for most of the first half, building its lead up to as many as 12, 26-14, with 3:45 remaining. Immaculata started to chip away at the lead and would get to within five with 1:40 left in the half. The Knights would take an eight point advantage, 31-23, into the locker room.
The Mighty Macs would continue to fight their way back into the game in the second half, and with 10:50 on the clock, took a one point lead on a Kelly Brown lay-up.
The next 10 minutes would feature six ties and three lead changes. Denis gave the Mighty Macs a 52-50 lead with 4:36 on the clock. Young was then fouled. She missed the first shot, but made her second, her 1,000th career point. The teams would continue to battle until the last minute of regulation when the Knights hit the right basket at the right time to come away with the win and their second consecutive CSAC Title.
Young was named the Championship MVP.
With the win, Neumann improves to 20-7 on the season and receives the CSAC automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The announcement for the tournament will be made on Monday afternoon.
