Men's Basketball Falls Short to Griffins

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's basketball team fell to Gwynedd-Mercy, 88-85, Saturday afternoon in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action.

 

Patrick O'Connor led the Knights with 20 points. Mike Walukiewicz and Rich Whitten each netted 12 points. Mark Blount added 10. Blount also had two block, which brings him up to 45 this season and sets a Neumann single season record (Omar Warthen 2002-03).

 

Jon Crabtree scored 23 points to lead the Griffins. Dan DelConte added 21 points while Jon Hogga notched 16. Frank Champion and Brandyn Wims each scored 12 points.

 

Gwynedd-Mercy jumped out to a quick 20-8 advantage and held the pace for the majority of the first half. Neumann scored five of the final seven points of the half. The Griffins went to the locker room holding a 41-37 advantage.

 

Neumann would tie the game four times in the second half and take a one points lead, 58-57, on a jumper by Blount. The Griffins responded by scoring 12 of the next 15 points to jump out to a 69-61 lead. The Knights again would once again start to cut in to the Griffins lead.

 

With under a minute on the clock, Walukiewicz hit a three pointer to bring the Knights to within one, 84-83. The teams would trade buckets and Gwynedd-Mercy would hold an 86-85 lead with 12 seconds left. The Knights fouled the Griffins and DelConte went 2-for-2 at the line for a three-point advantage. Terrance Clark attempted a three-pointer at the buzzer, but it went off the rim and Gwynedd-Mercy hung on for the 88-85 win.

 

Neumann is now 10-10 on the season and 7-6 in the CSAC. Gwynedd-Mercy is 16-4 and 11-2 in the conference. The Knights travel to Immaculata for a conference doubleheader on Monday evening. The women tip-off at 6 p.m. followed by the men at 8 p.m.
