Neumann Holds Off Immaculata

IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team defeated Immaculata University, 68-65, Monday evening in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action.

 

Two Knights notched double-doubles in the game. Katie Young netted 17 points and 12 rebounds. Bethany Humenik added 15 points and 10 boards. Erica Marvel notched 11 points while Sami Borcky scored 10.

 

Chelsea McTigue led all players with 22 points. Chrissy Esbensen and Rachel Denis each scored 11 points for the Mighty Macs while Leah Kuczynski added 10.

 

The game came down to the wire. Neumann held an eight point advantage, 60-52, with 4:24 left in regulation. The Mighty Macs then scored seven straight points to make it a one point game with 2:09 on the clock. The teams traded baskets until there were 33 ticks remaining. The Knights still held the one point advantage, 64-63.

 

Borcky then hit two free throws for a three point Neumann lead. Denis was then fouled on a three-point attempt, but only made 2-of-3 from the line and Humenik grabbed the rebound with 14 seconds left with the score Neumann 66, Immaculata 65. Humenik was fouled and sank both free throws to put Neumann back up by three. The Mighty Macs attempted two shots in the final three seconds, but neither connected and the Knights held on for the 68-65 win.

 

The first half remained close with Immaculata holding a six point lead and Neumann building a seven point lead. The Knights held a one point advantage, 28-27, at halftime.

 

Neumann held the lead for the majority of the second half, with its biggest lead coming with 8:31 left in regulation, 54-41. Immaculata did not go quietly and started to chip its way back into the game.

 

Neumann improves to 14-7 overall and 11-1 in the CSAC. Immaculata is now 14-8, 9-4 in the conference. The Knights host Baptist Bible on Thursday in a CSAC doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m. in the Mirenda Center.
