ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University baseball team opened its 2011 home season with a 4-1 win over Misericordia University on Tuesday afternoon.
Russ Gilliam went 6.2 innings for the win. He allowed one run, unearned, on five hits and struck out eight. Erik Klimoff picked up the save as he struck out two in the ninth inning. Ray Schmoltze and Brandon Melody also pitched in the win.
Bobby Callan went 3-for-3 and scored two runs. Bill Pace was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Derrek Etsell went 2-for-5.
The Knights scored two runs in the second inning, the second coming off a Cougar error. Etsell then knocked in the third run in the sixth inning for a 3-0 Neumann lead.
Misericordia took advantage of a Neumann error in the seventh inning to get on the board. The Knights then added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Pace knocked in Callan.
Neumann is now 9-1 on the season and will host Penn State-Brandywine tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
