ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University baseball team defeated New Jersey City University 7-4 Friday afternoon in non-conference action.
Derrek Etsell and Matt Compton each hit a two-run homerun for the Knights. Matt Smith went 7.0 innings to pick up the win. He allowed three runs, all earned, and struck out eight in the effort. Brendan Melody and Erik Klimoff each pitched an inning.
Francisco Ramirez hit a solo shot for the Gothic Knights while Jordan Tetrick hit a two-run homerun. Jeff Karczewski pitched 7.0 innings, allowed seven runs, six earned, and struck out two. Marr Delbert pitched the eighth inning for NJCU.
NJCU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Ramirez's homerun. Neumann responded with two runs in the bottom half on Etsell's homer.
The Gothic Knights took a one-run lead again in the fifth inning as Tetrick hit a two-run shot to left field. The Knights again responded as Compton hit his two-run homer in the home half of the sixth inning for a 4-3 lead.
Neumann would add three runs in the seventh inning, led by a two-run double by Bill Pace. Pace would then cross the plate as an unearned run on a fail pick-off attempt.
NJCU would score an unearned run in the top of the ninth, but Neumann came away with the 7-4 win.
Neumann improves to 13-3 on the season. NJCU is now 2-8. The Knights will host Baptist Bible College tomorrow in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
