GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – The Neumann University baseball team fell at Gwynedd-Mercy College 8-3 on Friday afternoon in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action.
All three of Neumann's runs came in the sixth inning on homeruns. Kevin Flanigan hit a solo shot and Joey Armata knocked out a two-run homerun, scoring Bobby McCormick.
Matthew Smith started the game and went 7.0 innings. He allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits and struck out five. Sean Quigley and Brendan Melody pitched in the eighth inning.
Gwynedd-Mercy struck first with two runs in the second inning. The Griffins added another in the fourth for a 3-0 lead.
Neumann notched its runs in the sixth inning to knot the game at three. Gwynedd-Mercy answered with an unearned run in the bottom half of the sixth to take back the lead, 4-3. The Griffins added insurance runs in the seventh and three in the eighth for the 8-3 final.
Neumann is now 21-7 overall and 5-5 in the CSAC. The two teams will meet again tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
