ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University baseball team took two key games against Gwynedd-Mercy College on Sunday afternoon in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action. Games scores were 6-3 and 5-3.
With the sweep, Neumann improves to 23-7 on the season. The 23 wins is a program record. The Knights are 7-5 in CSAC action.
In game one, Michael Tomeo went 2-for-2, scored three runs and hit at two-run homerun. Matt Grossi was 2-for-3 from the plate and knocked in two runs.
Russ Gilliam went 6+ innings. He allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits. He struck out nine as he improves to 7-1 on the season. Mike Dicken went an inning to pick up the save.
The Knights got on the board first as Bobby Callen scored on a sacrifice fly by Derrek Etsell. The Griffins put two runs on the board in the top of the second. Neumann tied the back at two in the home half of the second as Grossi knocked in Tomeo.
Tomeo crossed the plate again in the fourth inning on a Bill Pace single. Tomeo hit his two-run shot in the fifth inning for a 5-2 Neumann lead. Callen scored an unearned run in the sixth inning to cap the Knights scoring.
The Griffins put a run on the board in the top of the seventh, but could not make the comeback and the Knights won game one 6-3.
In the 5-3 game two, each team scored in just one inning each. Neumann plated its five runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a Tomeo two-run single. Gwynedd-Mercy scored its runs in the sixth inning on a three-run homerun.
Erik Klimoff started the game and went 4.0 innings for his first win of the season. Ray Schmoltze pitched 1+ innings. Chris McIntyre pitched two innings for the save.
Neumann will host Widener University on Tuesday afternoon for a single, non-conference game beginning at 3:30 p.m.
