Baseball Drops Two to Giants

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University baseball team dropped a pair of Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) games to Keystone College on Saturday afternoon. Game scores were 14-9 and 10-4.

 

In the first game, the Giants scored two runs in the top of the first inning. The Knights got one of the runs back in the bottom of the first on a Derrek Etsell RBI double.

 

Keystone put five unearned runs on the board in the third inning, notched two solo homeruns in the fourth and four more unearned runs in the fifth to jump out to a 14-2 lead after five.

 

Neumann put some key hits and walks together in the sixth inning and put six runs up, including a Bill Pace two-run double. The Knights added another run in the bottom of the seventh, but fell 14-9.

 

Ray Schmoltze started the game and took the loss. The Knights used six pitchers in the game. Scott Hammell pitched the seventh and was the only pitcher not to allow a Giant hit.

 

In game two, the teams traded runs in the second inning. Keystone then took a 3-1 lead on a two-run long ball in the top of the third. The Giants then added two more runs in the visitor half of the sixth inning.

 

Neumann scored two runs in the home half of the sixth as Kevin Flanigan hit a two-run single to score Pace and Ross Sweeney.

 

Keystone answered with a big top of the seventh and added five insurance runs. Neumann scored one run in the bottom of the seventh, but could not make a comeback and dropped game two 10-4.

 

Russ Gilliam went 5.1 innings and took the loss, his first of the season. Sean Quigley and Brendan Melody finished out the game for the Knights.

 

Neumann is now 18-5 on the season, 2-4 in the CSAC. The Knights host Rowan University on Tuesday afternoon. First-pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
