SCRANTON, Pa. – The Neumann University softball team swept Marywood University 6-1 in nine innings and 10-6 on Saturday afternoon to finished the regular season.
It took nine innings in game one, but the Knights pulled out a 6-1 win. Neumann got on the board in the third inning as Kim Kirkpatrick knocked in Deanna Christy. Marywood scored an unearned run in the fifth inning to tie the game at one.
Neither team would score again until the top of the ninth inning. The Knights started the inning by getting the first four batters on base. Kirkpatrick hit a bases-clearing double to put Neumann up 6-1. The Pacers went down in order in the bottom of the ninth, all striking out, for the Knights win.
Rachel Purpuro went all nine innings for the win. She struck out 11.
In game two, Neumann put seven runs on the board in the third inning en route to the 10-6 win. Eight straight batters reached base to start the third. Crystal Perlman hit a two-run single to complete scoring. The Knights scored three unearned runs in the first and second inning.
The Pacers scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the bottom of the seventh for their runs.
Brittany Campbell started the game and went 6.0 innings. She allowed three runs, one earned, and struck out two. Carley Gustin went 1.0 inning and allowed three runs.
Neumann completes the regular season 27-11 overall and 20-2 in the CSAC. The 20-2 record will give the Knights the No. 1 seed in the conference playoffs.
