BOYERTOWN, Pa. – The Neumann University baseball team fell to Gwynedd-Mercy College 5-4 in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) semifinal on Friday afternoon.
Neumann opened the scoring in the fourth inning with three runs. Bill Pace hit shot to left field. Joey Armata and Bobby Callan each had an RBI in the inning.
Gwynedd-Mercy answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Griffins opened the inning with back-to-back doubles. Austin Ley then stole home for a 3-2 score.
The teams would plate unearned runs in the fifth inning. Matt Grossi scored for the Knights for a 4-2 game. In the home half of the inning, GMC plated two unearned runs for a 4-4 game.
The game would remain tied until the bottom of the eighth inning when the Griffins would score the eventual game-winner on a double to center field.
In the top of the ninth, Kevin Flanigan hit a hard hit ball to second where it was snagged to end the game.
Russ Gilliam started the game and went 6.0 innings in the no decision. He allowed four runs, two earned, on four hits and struck out six. Mike Dicken went 2.0 innings and took the loss. He allowed on e run on two hits.
With the loss, Neumann (28-12) is eliminated from the CSAC Tournament. The Knights will now wait for the ECAC South Tournament announcement to see if their season will continue.
