POMONA, N.J. – The Neumann University men's basketball team picked up its first win of the season with a 74-65 win over Penn State-Abington in the Stockton Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
Rich Whitten led four Knights in double-digits with 17 points. Dom Gibson, TaVaune Griffin and Rafiq Williams each added 11 points. Williams also had 10 rebounds. Griffin picked up three blocks.
Neumann held the pace for a good part of the first half and scored 10 out of the first 12 points of the game. The Lions would keep pace and took a brief lead with 2:12 left in the half. Gibson hit a three-pointer as time ran out in the half to give the Knights a 27-26 lead at the break.
The teams were tied at 35-all two minutes into the second half as Neumann started to put the pressure on. The Knights went on an 18-1 over the next five and a half minutes to take a 53-36 advantage. Neumann kept PSU-Abington at arm's length for the remained 12 minutes and came away with the 74-65 win.
Whitten was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging 15.5 points per game and 10.0 rebounds per game.
Neumann (1-1) will head to Wesley College on Tuesday evening for non-conference action beginning at 6:00 PM.
