ASTON, Pa. The Neumann University women's ice hockey team opened their season with a  2-1 win against Buffalo State University in the ECAC West contest Saturday evening.

The Knights got off to a quick start with a goal from Casey Kilduff. Kilduff opened her scoring account as she received the puck in between the blue and split two Buffalo State defenders to finish on the breakaway 5:30 into the first period.

Moments later, Buffalo State scored on a power play opportunity 7:55 into the first period and tie the score at 1-1.

Neumann took the lead in the second period as they took advantage of a power play opportunity. Ang Gilmour took a shot and Edie Brenning followed up to get the rebound and scored the game winner with 13:55 remaining in the second period.

The third period was made up of tired legs and pure grit as the Knights hung on to win 2-1.
The crowd was excited to see the start of a new season for women's ice hockey and there were women's ice hockey alumni present to support the cause.

Shannon Donnelly was brilliant in between the pipes making 20 saves. Each team committed five penalties and Buffalo State was able to cash in on their only goal scored. The Knights were 0-4 on the power play.

Overall, it was a great start the season and the defense was steady.

“It's always nice to get your first win of the season, especially at home, but it was great to finally play a game that mattered and get anxious players on the ice,” mentioned Coach Handrahan.

The Knights (1-0 ECAC West) will host Buffalo State (1-2) in ECAC West action Sunday November 4, slated for a 1 p.m. start.
