CAMDEN, N.J. - The Neumann University baseball team opened up their season at home in a 5-4 nail biting extra inning victory over the Cougars of Misericordia University Tuesday afternoon.
Neumann made some noise as they took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first off of a Derrek Etsell homerun. Bill Pace knocked in Will Flores for the first run and then scored on the Etsell homerun for the 3-0 score.
The Cougars would tie the game 3-3 in the sixth and soon took the lead making it 4-3. Stand out player of the game, Etsell, did not let them have that satisfaction for too long, as he hit a solo homer, his second of the game, to tie the game back up 4-4.
The Knights were more than eager to go into extra innings and finish this game; and that is exactly what they did. With a sacrifice bunt from Bobby Callan, Kevin Flanigan was able to have a runner advance to second in ideal scoring position. Dave Kalash came in to pinch run for Flanigan and ended up scoring the game-winning run on a balk by the Cougars pitcher.
Russ Gilliam started the game for the Knights, going 6.1 innings. He allowed three runs, none earned, and struck out eight. Mike Dicken and Jake Yarber each went 1.2 innings. Erik Klimoff took the win on 0.1 innings with one strikeout.
Neumann (12-3) will travel to Jersey City, N.J. in a non-conference game against New Jersey City University on Tuesday, March 20th. First pitch slated for 3:30pm.
