Gwynedd Valley, Pa. The Neumann University baseball team wins doubleheader 8-6, 7-5 against Gwynedd-Mercy College in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC), Tuesday afternoon.
Kevin Flanigan provided a triple in both games to help the Knights win against the Griffins. Erik Klimoff would get saves for both games to lead the Knights.
In game one, Tyler Drinkard went three for four and had two RBI's. Mike Dicken would get the win and Erik Klimoff would get the save for the Knights.
The Griffins scored five runs in the first inning to get the Knights off to a slow start. The Knights would commit two errors in the inning, as well as allowing five hits.
Bill Pace would get a Sacrifice fly to bring in Will Flores and draw the Knights closer, as the Griffins led 5-1 after three innings.
The Knights would continue to cut the deficit, by getting two runs in the fourth inning. Tyler Drinkard hit a single to bring in Joey Armata. Drinkard scored from a sacrifice hit from Buddy Elgin. The Griffins led 5-3 after four innings.
The Knights exploded with four runs in the fifth inning, off a single by Drinkard and a triple from Kevin Flanigan..
The seven runs are all the Knights needed to take an 8-6 win.
In game two, the Griffins gave up three errors that became costly in a highly contested game.
The Knights became gracious guest by spotting the Griffins a two run lead in the first inning. Matt Spillman went 4.2 innings and gave up three runs and five strikeouts.
The Knights powered their way back with one run in the third inning and then another run in the fourth inning. Flores Sacrifice fly brought in Matt Grossi in the third inning and Michael Tomeo doubled to bring in Flanigan to score a run.
The Griffins battled back in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead.
The “pesky” Knights seem to answer to call again, as they drove in two runs to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth inning. Elgin hit a double to score Drinkard and then Elgin scored off a dropped ball in the outfield.
Flanigan stepped up to the plate in the top of the seventh inning wondering how he would match his triple in the first game. As the bases were loaded, Flanigan hit a triple to left center and drove in Drinkard, Derrek Etsell and Flores. The Knights led 7-4 to the delight of the Knights faithful that attended the game.
Erik Klimoff started the seventh inning conceding one run. But, Klimoff finished off any potential mess, by making sure the Griffins would strand two base runners and record the save. Russ Gilliam would be the winning pitcher.
The Knights 19-6 are back in action on Thursday April 5 against Keystone College at Campbell's Field, Camden N.J., first pitch is set for 3 p.m.
