Baseball Falls Late in NCAA Opener

LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The Neumann University baseball team fell to Ramapo College 10-6 in the first game of the 2012 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional.

 

Derrek Etsell had three hits for the Knights and scored two runs. Matthew Smith started the game and went 6.2 innings. He allowed four runs on nine hits and struck out four in the loss. Mike Dicken, Erik Klimoff and JJ Sims also saw time on the mound.

 

Etsell scored Neumann's first run on a throwing error by the catcher on a stolen base attempt. This tied the game at one.

 

The Roadrunners took a 2-1 lead I the bottom of the sixth inning. The Knights answered right away when Buddy Elgin scored on a sacrifice fly by Marty Sessa.

 

Ramapo bats started to get hot and would score eight runs in the seventh and eighth innings to take a 10-3 into the top of the ninth.

 

Neumann would not go quietly as Bobby Callan started the inning with a single. Callan then scored on a double by Will Flores. Flores scored when Kevin Flanigan reached on an error. Flanigan scored as Bobby McCormick hit into a fielder's choice. The Knights could not muster any more runs and fell 10-6.

 

Neumann (30-14) will face Daniel Webster tomorrow at 10:00 AM in an elimination game.
