LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The Neumann University baseball team held off Alvernia University 5-3 on Friday afternoon in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Tournament.
Will Flores and Bill Pace each had four hits as the Knights pounded out 15 in the game.
The game was a battle back and forth. The Crusaders took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. The Knights scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead. Derrek Etsell and Kevin Flanigan had the RBIs.
Alvernia took the lead back with two runs in the fifth inning. Pace started the top of the sixth inning with a double. He came around to score as Etsell moved to second on a wild pitch to tie the game at three.
Pace then had a two-run single in the top of the seventh to break the 3-3 tie. The Knights held on for the 5-3 win and advances to another game.
Frank Vitrano started the game and went 5.1 innings. He struck out four. Mike Dicken picked up the win, going 3.2 innings out of the pen. After walking the first batter he faced, Dicken sent down 11 straight for the win. The junior struck out seven as he improves to 6-1 overall.
Neumann (32-14) will face Ramapo College this evening.
