GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Neumann University men's soccer team (2-2) got out muscled by Gettysburg College 1-0 in non-conference action Saturday afternoon.
The Knights established possession for most of the first half on a raining, dreary day. Possession did not translate into goal scoring opportunities for the men's soccer team and the game can be cruel to the team that dominated play. This would be the case for the Knights, as late in the first half Nathan Beideman went down on the field, due to contact. As play continued, the Bullets found themselves in unfamiliar territory with a quick counter attack. As the Knights became vulnerable, the Bullets used combination play and were able to spring in an attacker just on the corner of the penalty. The Bullets striker hit a low and hard shot to the far post giving them a 1-0 lead.
The second half was up tempo, as the Knights pressed to get the equalizer. On one occasion, Mike Atallian drove a ball across the penalty box with Francis Kailondo standing four yards in front of the goal. He redirected the ball just a yard away from the post, as the Bullet fans gasped for air and re adjusted their momentary irregular heart beat.
Beideman moments later struck a ball from 25 yards out just missing the target. With 10 minutes remaining in the match, Dan Chrashewsky played a ball from the corner of the penalty box to Andy Attah six yards centrally from goal, as he tried a cheeky “Irish dancing” flick of the foot missing the entire size five ball.
The Knights would create a final attempt with four minutes remaining in the game. Chrashewsky gunned in another service outside the corner of the penalty, as the ball skipped through a montage of Knights players, which summed up a frustrating day.
“I was pleased with our overall style of play, the boys played extremely well, but we couldn't kick the ball in the Atlantic Ocean if it was in front of us,” explained Coach Sloan. “You have days when you're scoring goals for fun and there's day when you couldn't buy a goal. Problem being that I didn't even have a quarter on me, truth be told.”
The men's soccer team will host Wesley College Wednesday September 12 at 7 p.m.
