Neumann 81, Cedar Crest 29
ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann Women's basketball team exploded offensively with an 81-29 win, defeating Cedar Crest College in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC), Saturday afternoon
Neumann used two balanced halves to beat the Falcons. The Knights walked into half leading 40-14 and they showed the quality in the second half taking a 41-15 advantage.
All guns were a blazing when the Knights jumped out to a 25-1 lead five minutes into the game. The Knights cooled down the scoring form, momentarily, but led 33-9 with just under six minutes remaining in the first half. The Knights walked into half with a 40-14 lead.
The second half was much like the first half, as the Knights scored at will and taking a 66-18 lead with less than 10 minutes in the game.
Erica Marvel (jr. Oxford, Pa. / Oxford) led all scorers with 15 points. Nicole Fallon (fr. Wenonah, N.J. / Gloucester Catholic) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds and JoHanna Metzger (fr. Shamong, N.J. / Seneca) added 11 points.
The Knights (5-9, 3-3 CSAC) travel to Alvernia College Monday, January 14 at 7 p.m.
Men's Ice Hockey
Neumann 5, Fredonia 2
ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's ice hockey team scored eight seconds into the contest and they never looked back as they defeated non-conference Fredonia State University 5-2, Saturday afternoon.
The first period was a steady reminded of what happened the night before, as the Knights scored just eight seconds into the game. Andrew Love scored with Jon Low (fr. Haddonfield, N.J. / Jr. Flyers (AtJHL) and Aaron Keaney (sr. Minden, Ontario / Lindsey Muskies (OJHL) assisting on the goal to give the nights a 1-0 lead.
Dave Gervais (sr. Nepean, Ontario / Nepean Raiders (CCHL) extended the lead to 2-0 at the 11:04 mark in the first period off assists from Mikko Virtanen (fr. Rauma, Finland / Odessa (NAHL) and D'Lane Sather (jr. Wanham, Alberta / Sherwood Park Crusaders (AJHL).
Virtanen scored an even strength goal 4:50 into the second period to take a 3-0 lead. The Blue Devils took advantage of a power play opportunity to cut the Knight Lead to 3-1 into second period. Gervais and Sather assisted on the goal.
Mike Cauley (jr. Morton, Pa. / Springfield Junior Pics (EJHL) stretched the lead to a three goal cushion 1:35. Jake Kratz (sr. Harleysville, Pa. / Green Mountain Glades (EJHL) and Sather had the assists. As the visited the penalty box, the Blue Devils used the additional skater to reduce the Knights 4-2.
The Knights were outshot in the third period 9-5, but that was due in part to the Blue Devils having three power plays in the third period. The Knights struck, again, for good measure when Jon Low scored the final goal when he buried a shot at the 7:01 mark to make it 5-2 with Love grabbing the assist.
Braely Torris (Red Deer, Alberta / Southern Maine (ECAC East) made 24 saves on the day.
The Knights (9-4-2, 2-4 ECAC West) travel to Penn State University Tuesday, January 15 at 7:30 p.m.
Women's Ice Hockey
Cortland 3, Neumann 2
Cortland, N.Y. – The Neumann University women's ice hockey team fell 3-2 to ECAC West Cortland State University, Saturday afternoon.
Neumann scored the first goal 9:59 into the first period when Lyndsey Spatola (fr. Holbrook, N.Y. / National Sports Academy) scored a goal on the power play to take a 1-0 lead. Angela Gilmour (jr. Simcoe, Ontario / Hamilton Jr. Hawks) and Keira St-Laurent (fr. Stittsville, Ontario / Nepean Jr. Wildcats) provided the assist on the goal.
It would only take the Red Dragons 11 seconds into the second period to score an even strength goal and tie the Knights 1-1.
Edie Brenning (jr. Greely, Ontario / Nepean Jr. Wildcats) continues to show her scoring prowess, as she scored on a delayed penalty to take a 2-1 lead 13 minutes into the second period. Jaclyn King (fr. York, Pa. / Gilmour Prep) and Ashley Langdon (fr. Waterdown, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks IA) distributed the influential pass that led to the goal.
The Knights could not tighten the reigns defensively, as they gave up two goals in the final period. The Red Dragons would score their second goal of the game on the power play 42 seconds into the third period and they used their momentum to score the game winner 3:15 into the period.
Justina Mayr (fr. New Westminster, British Columbia / Pacific Steelers) made 21 saves for the Knights.
The Knights (5-10-1, 3-5 ECAC West) will host ECAC West opponents Utica College Saturday January 19, slated for 7 p.m.
Men's Basketball
Keystone 62, Neumann 51
La Plume, Pa. – The Neumann University men's basketball team were defeated by the Giants of Keystone College 62-51 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC), Saturday afternoon.
The Knights got off to a good start on the road, as they had a three point lead early in the game. TaVaune Griffin made a dunk to give the Knights a 6-3 lead with a little over three minutes into the game.
The Giants used a nine point run to take a 20-14 lead with just less than seven minutes remaining in the first half.
The Knights answered with a 10-3 run of their own and took a one point lead 24-23 off a Griffin layup. The Giants rattled off six points and walked into the intermission with a four point 28-24 lead.
The Giants jumped out to a 14 point lead early in the second half leading 47-33.
Neumann cut the deficit to just five points 51-46 with 5:50 remaining in the game off a Rich Whitten layup.
Keystone buckled down and shot up to a 12 point lead 59-47 with just over one minute left in the game.
The Knights were led by Mark Blount's 17 rebounds, 10 points and five blocked shots in the game. Whitten claimed 15 points and Griffin scored 12 points and brought down eight rebounds.
The Knights (4-9, 3-3 CSAC) will host Immaculata University in CSAC play Monday, January 14, tip-off at 7p.m.
